BTS & THEIR INCREDIBLE THOUGHTS IN LOVE YOURSELF: TEAR

by - June 17, 2018

Society is something that we really cannot separate from our lives as social beings. It is definitely a very good thing because making friends with as many people as we can is incredible. However, as nothing is perfect in this life, it, unfortunately, contributes to creating such anxious feeling from meeting horrible people attacking us hatefully or simply coming from our minds comparing ourselves to other people's lives and physical appearances.

This is definitely one of the major issues in this society that must be brought up. Just like what BTS or Bangtan Sonyeondan has been doing since 2013. From their debut single No More Dream (2013) that overall talks about how to bravely live in our own dreams without minding people judging ours until the newest album Love Yourself: Tear (2018), that attracts me so much. Not only is the album so great musically but the meaning behind each song is so realistic, meaningful and it truly inspires people to love themselves including me.

Started from their main single called Fake Love that is basically the open door of the new album releasing, the song gives the energy up in the air that makes the whole album can be speculated as legitimate hit, as it is. I mean, from start to finish, Fake Love has its own special characteristic that proves pop music they bring in can be trending without sounding exactly the same just like anything else. No wonder, one of the rap-lines, Min Yoongi or Suga once promised us that, "Fake Love is a great song to listen over and over."

It is true! The emo beats and the strong voices of the 7 members (Kim Nam Joon or RM, Kim Seok Jin, Min Yoon Gi or Suga, Jung Ho Seok or J-Hope, Park Ji Min, Kim Tae Hyung or V and Jeon Jeong Guk or Jungkookare blent perfectly in one powerful harmony that makes us feel so excited but at the same time thinking deeply about ourselves. It is none other than because of the meaning behinds the lyrics that is so realistic in conveying the love relationship between us and ourselves.

As RM said during the newest Beast 1 interview, "Love can be between a person and (another) person, but it could be me and myself." This is applied in Fake Love that talks about the dark side of our realistic paradigm about ourselves that he argues, "If you're not true to yourself, your love won't last forever." It is definitely quite deep as the song brings up about the issues when we sometimes feel so pressured to pretend to become another person for some reasons that makes it ended up becoming fake love.

Still, there is a lyric line in the end that says, "Wishing that love is perfect as itself," that represents our sincere and realistic hope toward loving ourselves, that only if it can be done smoothly. In fact, some happenings or situations and other related things are possible to make it difficult that shows the imperfection in everything. What I got, how the song talks about it totally maintain us to feel secured that it is okay to be in the imperfection of love as everyone experience it. Like, "We are not alone. Let's find the answer together."

From one song to another song in Love Yourself: Tear as their Love Yourself series, I found enlightenment in finding the answer about loving ourselves. It is started with Paradise and Love Maze that I love so much. And you know what, these two songs in the tracks number 5 and 6 do not even talk about romance as how people in general can make a quick assumption in the very first place regarding how the titles sound. And again, this is what makes BTS is so genius in presenting everything about their own music, don't you think?

As the slow beats coming in the very first place in the electronic pop music of Paradise, the song amazingly starts with one of the vocal lines' voice, Jungkook, that for me, such a great choice to pick. Interestingly, he starts with the illustration of a marathon that addresses people running in such competency as works, school and other endless duties and demands in this life. But the rests are so encouraging because the whole lyrics totally speak up about how we should sometimes take a breath and be brave enough to walk into our own journey.

What I love here, the concept of walking in our own path is regarded as dreams that everyone must have. Thinking about this, people must believe that dreams are all about being a singer, writer or anything else that sounds so huge and gives such life-impact dramatically. But there is one fact that we oftentimes forget that there must be people who just want to live their lives in just that's it. What makes me amazed, BTS can have that kind of mature thoughts to think about the matter in this society when people don't.

In the rap lines, for example, I do really love how RM describes the definition of dreams that it can be about buying a laptop next month or just simply earning lots of money and doing nothing. I believe, for some people who don't have that kind of stereotyped dreams, the lyrics must be very comforting that makes that kind of simple wishes transformed into precious dreams.  Even for those who have dreams to become this or that just like me, it is still encouraging because, in the end, they all loudly singing, "Stop running for nothing, my friend." This line truly shows equal possibilities everyone needs that we all deserve these present and future lives.

Isn't it comforting as it is? Just like Love Maze. With the same kind of beat touch in the music that is so incredible, Love Maze further describes the whole journey of us finding the answer about loving ourselves. The concept puts us in the illustration being in a maze that sometimes feels so scary yet we get to keep running "trapped in a maze of decisions" and "different chaos." Reading the English translation of the lyrics, I somehow imagine myself being in the exact maze in The Maze Runner (2014).

I know it is way too over dreadful (lmao) but the point is, what I got here, in every journey of achieving something including the matter of loving ourselves, the path will be complicated as there will be chaos mentioned before. That is why, there is a lyric line saying, "All around us is a maze, different paths" that we don't even know what is in the end. But let's get be real, all of us must be expecting "we're going toward paradise," right? Lucky enough, in the end of the lyrics, the 7 members of BTS encourage us to just focus on the path together.

I love how it comes with the lines, "Hardship will try to deceive us but just focus ..." and "If we're together, even an endless maze is paradise." It is so comforting that the song motivates us to orientate our focus on what lies ahead instead of what's around us that could possibly press down our motivation. I mean, like the songs tells, from discouraged situations to people affecting us negatively during the journey. Just remember, "let us be us and let them be them," meaning to say, "just enjoy our own moments moving forward."

That line totally speaks about the same message with the track number 10, So What, that majorly emphasizes us to stop minding about what people and negative whisper inside us say. It is all started with the intro lines that speaks up, "somebody call me right one, somebody call me wrong, I'm not gonna care about it, why don't you do so as well." Then, as the catchy EDM beats coming, the two simple lines "So what" and "Let go" definitely gets us hyped up. The rests are about meditating in the deep lyrics that are incredibly brought up in such exciting and catchy music I love.

It even gets me emotionally and happily thinking about the mentioned messages above while listening to 13430 in the track number 4 that orientates toward Pluto. As we know, Pluto once became a planet until it officially got taken up from the list although it in fact still continuously revolute circling the sun just like the rests do. This represents the feeling of us sometimes being left out from society that everyone must ever experience it.

But even in that kind of situation, the song called The Truth Untold in the track number 3 featuring Steve Aoki gives the listeners such feeling that "I still want you" that specifically speaks to ourselves in my own personal orientation. For me, it is quite relatable to Fake Love as the whole lyrics bring up about "I put a mask again and go to see you." But here, I love how the vocal lines, Jimin, V, Jin, and Jungkook, keeps singing "I still want you" over and over that resembles people we love or simply ourselves who we love, in my opinion.

Not to mention, the song has classic rock beats that remind me to some musicians such as Queen that I totally forget which song that I mean because to be honest I don't really listen to their songs but my mom is a huge fan (that's why!). But if I could mention one current musician that can quite describe the classic rock in The Truth Untold, I would like to say Harry Styles with his first single Sign of The Times (2017). For sure, they are all totally different with their own high-qualified characteristics in music.

Talking about a song with another different level of quality, how could I forget the number one track Intro: Singularity? In one package, the slow R&b song is so perfect especially when they chose V as the main singer here. I mean, his deep voice singing each brooding lyrics with the characteristic of "languorous tempo, sudden pauses, and distant ad-lib" mentioned in Billboard, is so fit and incredible. Just like me, I bet anyone will immediately sink deeper and deeper into the music.

That beautiful experience will also happen in the track number 7, Magic Shop,. As a fan song produced by Jungkook himself, the song really gets my feeling in every way. No wonder, it honestly was the first song in Love Yourself: Tear that attracted me so much. I mean, let's begin with how the song starts with (once again) V's incredibly deep voice and after that just let it blend perfectly with the signature feathery vocals of the other 6 BTS members.

Not to mention, the lyrics are so beautiful to become any romantic letter you would imagine to get from good people like BTS. Interestingly, the romanticism here isn't something like what you expect from a guy who unsurprisingly will give you such flirtatiously baloney lines that are too much and untrue-to-life. In fact, the lyrics here are so considerating and realistic about life with illustrations of galaxy, flowers and definitely magic shop.

In my understanding, the song speaks about them understanding the struggles of our journeys in loving ourselves or simply living our lives faithfully. But as they sing loudly, "You gave me the best of me, so you'll give you the best of you." and "So show me, I'll show you" as the major trademarks in the song, I bet BTS conveys their true feelings to offer their hands to sincerely help the listeners to enjoy the journey, finding the answer, together through their songs.

To be honest, listening to that kinda song is so comforting for me. It is the same when I listen to Anpanman in the track number 9. With its funky-electro pop that has the same kind of super exciting upbeat touch with Go Go in Love Yourself: Her (2017), the song lets BTS speaks up their aspirational messages to people around the globe, that everyone can actually be a hero even with their imperfection. Just like the real cartoon character of the Japanese "Bread Man" Anpanman, the key is just simply being kind and willing to help each other. What a good message, right? And you know what, that's what BTS been doing since debut and specifically here, they declare it to the fans in a good way.

Definitely, listening to every each of those BTS songs really gets me the feeling. Their music isn't only high qualified in their musical points but also their positive messages in the lyrics. In addition, this is what I also love. Not only do they concern about social issues but they also share their personal inspiring journeys.

It is shown in Airplane Pt. 2 in the track number 8. With special latin pop vibes that are presented as a surprising gift in the album, the song continues the specific journey of J-Hope about wondering how it feels riding an airplane before debuting, story-told in Airplane in Hope World (2018) mixtape. But specifically here, it is now all about enjoying the international sensations of traveling around the globe after their hardworking being fruitful as we know how it is now. Definitely, it gives the global feel we want to feel. And not to mention, a lil sense of being inspired "if they can then we can" will be felt following the smooth latin flow in the song.

But before that, we should first discuss the crucial part when the album is completed perfectly with the Outro: Tear as another masterpiece of the trinity rap lines of BTS, RM, Suga and J-Hope. It is trully outstanding as the perfect conclusion of the Love Yourself: Tear. From the hard-hitting emotional rap to the powerful lyrics, that speak about the sadness and hardship on realizing the fake love. They are all portrayed in a different new style especially when Suga shows his different characteristic by bringing out his vocal ability in rapping. Still, each individual is predominate with their own superior styles that blend in one perfect impressive rapping.

As a result, in one package, the album Love Yourself: Tear becomes one legitimate megahit that makes BTS unquestionably deserves to be in the number 1 of Billboard 200 Chart and Billboard Hot 100 Top 10 as they indeed already achieved them. Not to mention, Grammy even mentions the album as the "highly anticipated album." For sure, not all kind of music can be mentioned in Grammy in just that's it, don't we agree? So, as a music lover who listens to their songs, I just want to simply sum up that language barrier will never hold their high qualified musical points and positive messages in the songs to be appointed internationally.
